«A maior habilidade quando se vai a uma festa é saber quando está na hora de sair», escreveu Michael Stipe esta quarta-feira, 21 de Setembro de 2011, dia em que - talvez com alguns anos de atraso - os R.E.M. anunciaram a separação, ao fim de 31 anos de carreira.

Nasceram com a New Wave, no início de 1980, em Athens (EUA), e publicaram o primeiro single há 30 anos (1981). Atingiram a fama universal uma década depois, com o disco “Out of Time”, mas o sucesso nunca lhes subiu à cabeça (coisa que impressionava Kurt Cobain, que nunca soube lidar com a fama). Não eram os melhores; mas foram uma grande banda, e deixaram-nos uma quantidade impressionante de grandes músicas – como esta:
